The Bluecoat Nest

Following a decisioNest Logo Finaln by the Governors of Bluecoat C of E Primary School to expand the school age range, families with two year olds in the Great Torrington area now have the option of sending them to Bluecoat from the term after their 2nd birthday.

Established in September 2015, ‘The Bluecoat Nest’ is located in what was previously the Children’s Centre building.  Provision for two year olds is linked to the school nursery and delivered by highly skilled Early Years practitioners and qualified teaching staff. In addition, ‘The Nest’ will also offers a range of sessions for parents, carers and their children of pre-school age including a Maths Café, Reading Café, and Play and Learn sessions.

Whilst every child in England who is aged three or four is entitled to 570 hours of free early education or childcare each year, there is also financial support available for eligible two year olds under the ‘Golden Ticket’ scheme.

A Golden Ticket allows parents and carers to access free childcare for their two year old, if eligible. This could be a place in a nursery, preschool or with a childminder. Only those providers that are judged as good or outstanding by Ofsted will be funded to admit two year olds. Occasionally, if there are not enough good or outstanding places in an area, a provider with a ‘requires improvement’ outcome will be funded. ‘The Bluecoat Nest’ accepts this funding.

A two year old is eligible for free childcare if parents and carers are in receipt of any of the following benefits:

Universal Tax Credits
Income Support (IS)
Income-based Jobseekers Allowance (JSA)
Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
Child Tax Credit with an annual household taxable income (as assessed by HMRC) not over £16,190
Working Tax Credits with an annual household taxable income (as assessed by HMRC) not over £16,190
The Working Tax Credit 4 weeks run on
Guaranteed Element of State Pension Credit
Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999.

Or if the two year old:

  • attracts Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
  • is looked after by the Local Authority
  • has left care through special guardianship or through an adoption order or residence order or
  • has a current statement of special educational needs (SEN) or an Education, Health and Care Plan.

A Golden Ticket is also sent to the carers of two year old children in care and to parents of children with a statement or education, health and care plan.

If you have not received a Golden Ticket but think you may be eligible, you can check your eligibility and apply at or call 0345 155 1013.

Torridge Children’s Centre Services

Action for Children continue to run Children’s Centre services from the Beech Room on the Bluecoat site.  Angela Fleming, Headteacher at Bluecoat C of E Primary School said, “it is with great sadness that, due to changes to the tender imposed by the Local Authority, we have had to relinquish responsibility for the delivery of Children’s Centre services in Great Torrington.  We will, however, continue to work very closely with Action for Children to support the delivery of high quality services to our children and families.  We are delighted to be welcoming two year olds to the school from September and hope that the provision offered in ‘The Nest’ will run alongside Children’s Centre services to ensure the best possible outcomes for the children of Great Torrington”.

Torrington Children’s Centre is still very much open for business and a full overview of the services is available on the Action for Children website.
