Bristol Bound: SS Great Britain

On Tuesday 27th January, Year 3 visited the SS Great Britain in Bristol.  They took part in a Brunel workshop, learning about how parts of the ship were designed and built, and had a go at joining plates of metal together with rivets – it’s harder than it looks!

They also talked about what it might have been like to attend the launch of the SS Great Britain, and dressed up in 19th century costumes to re-enact the launch.

They were given a guided tour of the ship, where they learned about the differences between travelling in first and third class (steerage) – it was very dark and cramped in steerage! They liked sitting in the First Class Dining Saloon, and were very impressed with how the seats could face different directions!

The trip really helped to bring their learning about Brunel to life – they also got to see the Clifton Suspension Bridge on the journey. Even the coach breaking down on the way home didn’t spoil the day – it was all part of the adventure!
